Originally, the word “solitude” defined an uninhabited place, then a person who lived withdrawn from the world. Today, it characterises the feeling of being “isolated”.

Solitude does not have the same meaning if it is chosen or endured. If, for some, it is a consequence of unhappy events that have been suffered, for others, it is a need for personal development and fulfilment. We can therefore, differentiate between the feeling endured that generates suffering and the chosen and assumed state, which leads to personal development.
