Manlike is inspired by the stories of women who have had to become men. The “sworn virgins” of the Western Balkans made a vow of chastity, dressed and lived like men in order to avoid the treatment that women in general suffered. Milena Ugren’s manner of moving is very evocative: dramatic and concise, she draws upon the tense isolation of different parts of her body, interspersed with moments of relaxation. Accompanied by George Koulas’s vocal percussion, she creates a quietly violent and subversive duo which raises questions about gender and domestic violence.
