« Scarabeo » is the Italian word for scarab, a beetle used as symbol by the ancient Egyptians for the heavenly cycle of rebirth. « Scarabeo », though, in Italian is also the translation of the table game Scrabble, where letters are used many times to form different words with different meanings on one space.

These two ideas are the main magnetic poles orientating this work. Starting from the thought of treating the performer’s body only as a physical object.  The joyful duet evolves through crazy figures and a narration puzzle. The public’s gaze, at the center of the evolution, creates a new dynamic !

Andrea Costanzo Martini:
Andrea Costanzo Martini was born and raised in Italy where he received his first education in contemporary dance and ballet. After few years in Germany where he danced with the Aalto Theater Essen, he moved to Tel Aviv to Join the Batsheva Young Ensemble and later the Batsheva Dance Company. Between 2010 and 2014 he danced with the Cullberg Ballet and the Inbal Pinto and A. Pollack Dance Company. Since 2013 he is creating and performing his own works. He received the first prize for dance and Choreography at the International Tanz Solo Competition in Stuttgart 2013 and was awarded several prizes for the two solo works “What Happened in Torino” and “Occhio di Bue”.
Between 2013 and today Andrea focused on solo and duet works such as Trop, VoglioVoglia, SCARABEO (selected by Aerowaves Festival 2018), and more recently he started collaborating with companies such as Balletto di Roma and Balletto Teatro di Torino with the pieces Intro and Balera. Andrea’s research in dance focuses in both extreme physicality and theatricality of the performance act and explores the power balance that is created during a show between the dancers and the spectators. Always filled with humour and supported by a wide range of skills, Martini’s work questions and plays with the expectations of the dance medium.
